KHULNA, Bangladesh - On Sunday morning, fuel traders and workers in the Khulna division went on indefinite strike to press their various demands, including an increase in commission on fuel sales.
Fuel traders at Khulna's Padma, Meghna, and Jamuna oil depots have halted fuel oil extraction and transportation to 15 districts during the strike, which began Sunday morning.
The traders and workers have threatened to continue the strike until their demand for a higher commission on fuel oil sales is met.
"We have initiated several programs to press for an increase in the commission for fuel sale," said Sheikh Murad Hossain, general secretary of the Khulna Divisional Fuel Oil Distributors Association. Even though a gazette addressing the commission extension was issued in response to our request, it remains unimplemented."
"The gazette is full of mistakes," he said, referring to it as a formula gazette. The demand, not just the gazette, must be carried out. Our campaign will continue until the demands are met."
The fuel oil traders' demands also include increasing the commission on fuel sales to at least 7.5%, increasing the economic life of tank lorries to 30 years from 25 years, and issuing a gazette notification naming fuel traders as commission agents, as previously pledged.
Earlier on September 3, fuel oil traders went on strike to press similar demands, but they called it off after receiving assurances from the authorities.
