KAREN STATE, Myanmar - The Karen National Union (KNU) confirmed on Thursday that it had taken control of an army base near the Thai-Myanmar border in Myawaddy Township.
According to KNU spokesperson Padoh Saw Taw Nee, the base fell after a full day of fierce fighting.
"Our sources on the ground have just informed us that the base has been taken." The fighting was intense, and the junta even launched multiple airstrikes. "However, we can now confirm that the base has fallen and that we are in control of it," he said.
According to a KNU spokesperson, the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), the KNU's armed wing, and allied anti-regime forces clashed with junta troops near the base on Wednesday evening. They continued fighting through the night and into the next day.
As the fighting heated up, residents in the area reported hearing heavy artillery fire and airstrikes.
