DAWEI, Myanmar - According to a fellow anti-coup activist, the military arrested a famous protest leader in the southeastern coastal town of Dawei on Tuesday, along with three members of the family who lived in the house where he was hidden.
At 6:30 a.m., some 30 soldiers stormed the residence. They detained Htoo Myat Lwin, a 22-year-old Dawei Coalition Strike Committee organizer. The troops also arrested Hla Pe, 50, and his 18-year-old daughter and 28-year-old son.
"The house was raided while they were sleeping," a strike committee member said, requesting not to be named. "We heard that they surrounded the house before arresting the victims. The neighbors said that they could hear people being beaten."
Soldiers discovered the whereabouts of Htoo Myat Lwin, a Dawei University student, after apprehending and questioning nine members of the strike committee in recent days. Htoo Myat Lwin is the tenth member to be apprehended since November 25.
In Tanintharyi Region, Dawei is a hotbed of the anti-coup movement, with the junta raiding the homes of several National League for Democracy officials. According to residents, the military has stationed armed men at security checkpoints across the area.
In Dawei and elsewhere, the junta restricted the usage of two or more men on motorcycles at the same time to reduce guerrilla forces' hit-and-run attacks on soldiers.
Locals claim that the prohibition is causing difficulty for those who rely on motorbikes for a living.
