Turkey cannot shoulder new migration burden from Afghanistan: Erdogan

ANKARA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Turkey does not have the capacity to shoulder a new migration burden from Afghanistan, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his German counterpart on Tuesday.

Bilateral relations, Afghanistan and migration issues were discussed during a phone conversation between Erdogan and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Turkey's presidency said in a statement.

Turkey and Germany, as NATO allies, showed "admirable solidarity and coordination" during the evacuation process from Afghanistan, Erdogan said, underlining the need to continue the same approach in this critical period that the country is passing through.

They also discussed the delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan by the U.N. and other aid organizations.

Erdogan said no one would want an experience similar to the Syrian refugee influx in 2015, emphasizing that Germany and the European Union should provide support to neighboring countries which carries the burden of migration from the war-torn Afghanistan.

He warned that some European countries have reduced the issue only to border security.

The Turkish leader urged the EU to take steps in realizing the March 18 refugee agreement with all its dimensions: the accession talks between Turkey and the EU should be reinitiated, the customs union agreement must be updated, and Turkish citizens should be granted visa exemption.
