TOKYO, July 24 (Xinhua) -- China kicked off their Olympic 3x3 women's basketball campaign with mixed results on Saturday - a 21-10 win over Romania and a 19-9 defeat to the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team, at the Aomi Urban Sports Park in Tokyo.
China began with a 4-0 run to set the tone of the game facing Romania. Romania clawed back step by step to tie it at 8-8. Wan Jiyuan and Wang Lili then made two 2-pointers consecutively to help China pull away again.
The Chinese wonder women dominated the court during the final five minutes, crushing Romania with a 9-0 run before the 10-minute limit.
Yang Shuyu and Wan Jiyuan both scored six points for China, while Wang Lili added five points and grabbed game-high nine rebounds. Veteran Zhang Zhiting had four points. Claudia Cuic led Romania with four points and three rebounds.
But the Chinese team couldn't keep the momentum and lost to the ROC 19-9. The ROC played like a locomotive and never trailed throughout. After an 11-2 deficit, China struggled to claw back to 13-8.
However, Russian athletes' suffocating defense disrupted Chinese ballhandlers and secured the win with a 5-0 run with 58 seconds left.
Olga Frolkina scored a game-high seven points for the ROC and Anastasiia Logunova added five points and six rebounds. Wan Jiyuan led China with four points and four rebounds.
China will meet Italy and France on July 25. As an exciting popular urban sport, 3x3 basketball makes its Olympic debut in Tokyo from July 24 to 28. The eight 3x3 women's teams are China, the U.S., the ROC, Japan, Romania, Italy, Mongolia and France.
China claimed the FIBA 3x3 women's basketball World Cup title in 2019. Zhang Zhiting is the only member of that title-winning squad in the Tokyo Olympics.
