Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan eliminated Shiho Akita of Japan 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday to set up a quarterfinal match against top-seeded Shuai Peng at the Biyuan Cup Zhengzhou Women's Tennis Open in Zhengzhou, China.
"I feel really good. It was windy and my opponent played really well today," Diyas said. "I had to fight for every ball. I was trying to play aggressively and it worked."
Two seeded players advanced on Thursday but a third was eliminated.
Third-seeded Ying-Ying Duan of China rallied to beat Arina Rodionova of Australia 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Her quarterfinal opponent will be Su Jeong Jang of South Korea, who advanced when sixth-seeded Kurumi Nara of Japan retired with the Korean player leading 7-5, 4-0.
Also, fifth-seeded Saisai Zheng of China was pushed to three sets before ousting Sabina Sharipova of Uzbekistan 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
