The incident occurred on the outskirts of the city of Gujrat, which is located about 200km southeast of the capital, Islamabad.
Police have confirmed the children were on their way to school when the bus was incinerated.
Many buses in Pakistan are powered by compressed natural gas, a cheap method of powering vehicles.
Cylinder blasts are common in vehicles carrying the pressured canisters.
